Our Formation & History
The San Francisco Mayor’s Women’s Golf Council was founded in July of 2014 by Mayor Ed Lee in support of his passion for San Francisco Golf and his interests of seeing the game promoted and played more by Women at San Francisco Golf Courses. The Mayor’s vision started with a luncheon held at Harding Park attended by 24 men and women who gathered to share their experiences, passions and goals to increase the awareness of San Francisco Golf; whether by learning the game, playing the game or participating as a spectator of the game at the various tournaments held in the Bay Area.
A Board was created to form an infrastructure of volunteers to implement the Mayor’s goals in making San Francisco "the most women friendly Golf City in America”. With events like the Swinging Skirts held at Lake Merced Country Club, the 2016 Women’s US Open coming to Cordevalle in San Martin, and the historic San Francisco City Championship held annually at Harding Park, the San Francisco Bay Area has been an iconic host location for the best players in the world.
This is the first program in our country who was supported by a Mayor who understands the virtues of golf. It embraces the nine core values taught by the First Tee, which instill attributes that stay with us for a lifetime through a game that provides fun, exercise and friendship in the greatest city in the world.

Mayor Ed LeeEd Lee was the 43rd mayor of San Francisco and the first Asian American to hold the office. During his time in office, he founded the San Francisco Mayor’s Women’s Golf Council in July 2014 because of his passion for San Francisco golf and his desire to see more women play & enjoy the game. Through his dedication to the organization & the sport, he sought to use this organization to bring more awareness to the SF golf community, and hosted an annual Mayor’s Cup golf tournament to benefit a number of local charities.
Ed Lee was a great supporter of the game of golf and of women in the sport. Although he will be greatly missed by the SF golf community, this council hopes to continue carrying the torch of promoting women’s golf & increasing public access to the sport. Golf is a lifetime sport meant to be enjoyed by all people, and I’m proud San Francisco has the best public golf courses in America. The Women’s Golf Council is dedicated to supporting our mission to establish long lasting and positive experience in golf for our local Bay Area women and for generations of women to come.” |
